Building Envelope Specialist – BES
The Building Envelope Specialist Training Program offers intensive, hands-on training that is ideal for recent graduates of technical or engineering schools, engineers who are new to the building envelope, those who need a refresher in new technologies, and facility managers, sales representatives, and others who want to gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of the building envelope, including conductivity, conductance, and R values.
The workshop will address the more technical aspects of design and will provide participants with the opportunity to learn more about the uses of building envelope and enclosure systems that can reduce energy consumption and improve the quality of the indoor environment.
In simple terms, a building envelope specialist cares about how well a building works from a technical point of view. This includes everything from the materials used to build it to the systems that keep it running. Building science is a big and varied field. Because of this, a building envelope consultant could be involved in construction technology, making homes more energy efficient, and even inspecting buildings.
Krishnaji Pawar, who is an expert on sustainability, put together the Building Envelope Specialist (BES) Training Program.
Specialized in developing sustainable design strategies for Green Building Certification systems (LEED, GSAS, etc.), energy & water conservation, commissioning, environmental impact assessment & environmental management systems.
The following are some highlights from the various topics covered in the course:
- Learn about conduction, convection, radiation, and infiltration.
- Understand conductivity, conductance, and R values.
- Sources of Building Heat Gain or Loss (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient)
- Ability to perform seasonal energy consumption calculations and degree day formula use
- HVAC Integration of the Building Envelope and Building Envelope Optimization
- Building envelope commissioning
- Sustainability of the Building Envelope
What is Building Envelope Specialist?
The building envelope consultant is concerned with all aspects of a building’s performance when it comes to energy efficiency (residential or commercial): air leakage levels, the integrity of air and vapour barriers, insulation performance, and energy consumption. Obviously, the objective is to create the most energy-efficient building envelope possible, one that ensures indoor comfort and efficient energy consumption.
The building envelope is intended to physically separate the exterior from the interior of a house. The building envelope of a typical residential dwelling consists of the roof, the foundation, the walls, and the windows and doors. Over time, these components are susceptible to performance issues, and a consultant is tasked with assessing the issues and proposing viable “solutions.”
Where a building’s beauty is described in terms of its location, orientation, usability, and durability, its design must take these factors into account. Our clients rely on our Building Envelope Specialists for a variety of advice, from material selections during the design phase to proactive maintenance recommendations during the building’s operational life.
By considering a building to be a living, breathing entity, the envelope can be designed, maintained, or renewed with constructability and high performance in mind.
The building envelope specialist then collaborates with architects, building owners, and construction companies to create a building envelope that can withstand and protect the facility from the surrounding environment’s exterior elements.
A building envelope specialist can provide much more value than just preventative measures, though. They also investigate any ongoing issues, such as water infiltration, and provide remedial design for existing construction. The remedial design process includes developing the scope of repair, obtaining bids, overseeing repairs, and providing construction management services.
A building envelope specialist is also integral to the new construction phase. As an independent, third-party contractor, the consultant ensures that all building envelope systems are installed in accordance with design documents, code requirements, manufacturer specifications, and industry standards.
